Lavish Music | The Smooth Vibes of Jill Scott
A couple months ago I saw on ticketmaster that Jill Scott was making her way to Toronto and I IMMEDIATELY purchased tickets. As much as I am a lover of the summer air, I am also a lover of everything neo-soul and the smooth vibes it brings to my ears. I remember when Jilly from Philly came on my TV screen in the early 2000s and I remember thinking to myself that it was so awesome to see someone make it the music industry without having to be a size 0 wearing next to nothing, it was literally all about the music.
I love the neo-soul genre because every artist that I have stumbled upon can actually sing, their lyrics make you feel exactly how they are feeling, and they can either play an instrument(s) or understand the value of true instrumentation and Jill exemplifies all of these things. Her range is amazing, she can go from floaty falsetto highs to grungy baritone lows. Her lyrics are so descriptively flirty and sensual and incorporates powerful poetry moments that leave you wanting more. Her last album was in 2015 and it is so crazy to see so many dedicated fans that came out to support her, she didn’t need a new album to promote her tour she just performed all of her musical poetry that she has been making for almost 20 years.
The last song she performed was “He Loves Me” and her rendition of this was honestly so incredible to experience. She added opera vibes and she added what sounded like a mixture of Spanish and Italian languages; like honestly I was just in awe of the art that was being displayed right before my eyes, my ears were seeping of joy and all I could do is shout “YYYAAASSSSS” because I literally just felt that if I expressed myself in the way I wanted to I would end up on the ground somewhere.
